Independence Days of December

The day of Independence for a nation is one of great celebration, pride and culture. Yesterday the small nation of Portugal is celebrating their independence day. Today the United Arab Emirates is toasting independence from the United Kingdom in 1971. In fact, 11 nations will observe national days in the month of December!

Jack Who?

What’s more evocative of Halloween than a jack o’lantern glowing in the night? Who came up with the idea of carving faces into pumpkins and putting candles inside?

The tradition of the Jack O’Lantern started in Ireland, only it wasn’t carved pumpkins, it was carved turnips. Why would people carve turnips? It all began with a legend.

America Celebrates A Day Earned

“Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for recreation.” Those were the sentiments declared at the first Labor Day parade. Tired of working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week workers in the United States began to unionize. On September 5, 1882 10,000 workers took an unpaid day off and marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City to both honor American workers and make complaints against their employers.
