Gigantic New Ring Around Saturn Discovered

Saturn NASA announced the discovery of an enormous ring around the planet Saturn. A system of rings, consisting mostly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust exist around Saturn, so how did we miss this one?

As we reported back in June the NASA Mars Rover “Spirit” became stuck between a rock and soft soil. After 3 months of simulations on Earth by JPL and Cal-Tech engineers, it appears that getting Spirit to rove again will be very difficult.

NASA and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) announced the successful testing of a environmentally-friendly propellant made out of aluminum powder and water ice that could be used in future space missions.

Amy Simon-Miller of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. estimates the diameter of the impacting object was the size of several football fields. According to NASA, the force of the explosion on Jupiter was thousands of times more powerful than the suspected comet or asteroid that exploded over the Siberian Tunguska River Valley in June 1908.

40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

Monday is the 40th anniversary of the Moon landing. To celebrate the event, astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins will be meeting with President Obama at the White House. Joining them will be NASA Administrator Charles Frank Bolden, a former astronaut and the first African-American to lead the agency.

NASA’s Mars Rover Update: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Spirit’s microscopic imager at the end of its arm was used to take a series of pictures of of the underbelly for the first time last month. Although the imager was not intended for that purpose, the resulting panoramic image is incredible to see.

Houston: We have a problem. Spirit is stuck!

Remember Spirit? NASA’s Mars rover is in trouble, stuck 2 miles from the original site. Judging from images received from a rover cam scientists believe its a loose rock giving it trouble.
